I like to think that I am relatively up on the latest design trends and lingo as much time as I spend reading/watching/thinking about interior design. That said, I've been on a major hiatus the past few years since having kids so I'm cutting myself a little slack! Anyway, about a month or two ago, I found an Instagram account that I was really enjoying - Hygge_for_Home.
There was just something about the super homey vibe and the coolly edited photos that I was really digging. I did read that the account I followed was located in Cardiff, Wales so I just assumed "hygge" was their street or neighborhood or some Welsh word I wasn't savvy enough to know. I didn't think too much about it other than enjoying the photos I was seeing. Then suddenly I kept seeing that work "hygge" pop up everywhere. I finally did what any curious person would do and I googled it to see what in the world it was.
And no wonder I was totally into the photos that I was seeing. Hygge is a design mantra that I can completely subscribe to, but have only just been made aware. According to Hygge House, "Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word [not Welsh after all!] used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special."
Um, hello? No wonder I liked what I was looking at! We're talking about a style that is summed up as cozy, kinda Christymasy looking, hot-chocolate-by-the-fire-drinking, stay inside laughing and hanging with your best friends. If there ever was such a thing as me, THIS.IS.IT. I know spring is here (supposedly!) and I should be coming out of my hibernation but after learning about this, I may stay cuddled up by my fire for a while longer...
