Design Inspiration for a Shared Girls Beach Bedroom

I'm working on a room for two girls to share at a beach house so I put together this mood board for my client to get a sense of what direction we are going in. I want the room to have a coastal vibe without beating you over the head with beach, you know? I also want the space to feel feminine without being too girly. My favorite way to do that is to add light blue. I just love light blue for girls. And lastly, I want the room to be one that can grow with them. They're in elementary school now but as we all know, time flies!!

Because the room is small, I've decided to go with a small dresser between the beds that they will share. We ended up purchasing this dresser from Overstock.

Since the dresser is pretty simple, we will likely add some bling with the hardware for the knobs. Right now we are thinking something like these:

In order to free up space on the top dresser and to maximize the lighting both beds get, I am proposing sconces above each of the beds. I adore these little sconces from Target and at under $50 a piece, they are a bargain!

The homeowner has adorable rattan headboards for the twin beds already. We just need sheets and bedding. We have just pulled the trigger on these sheets from Pottery Barn Teen.

We decided to go with something with a little more visual interest than the plain blue that I originally sourced in the mood board and ended up purchasing these comforters:

We will also add in a couple of throw pillows over the comforter for added texture. Initially I sourced these which I love:

Here are a few other contenders:

1. 2. 3.

Finally, to me, the pièce de résistance is the artwork. Well, it is actually fabric that we are going to turn into art. Years ago, I posted a quick DIY where framed some fabric for our master bedroom. We still have it hanging in our playroom today. These cheap and cheerful numbers have withstood the test of time and people ask me all the time where I got them. Here's ours:

Framing fabric is an affordable way to get great visual appeal and the fabric offers extra texture that a normal paper print wouldn't give you. This Lulie Wallace fabric is so adorable. I love the colors and the playfulness of the design. Plus, the plants have a kind of tropical/coastal vibe.

We may have enough extra fabric left after the art project to play around with doing a throw pillow or something for a reading chair/nook on the other side of the room. Originally I planned to frame the fabric in a white frame but since the walls are white, we may need to punch it up a little with some metallic or maybe another fun color. Because colors can vary so much on computer screens, I am waiting for the comforters to come in before we purchase the fabric to make sure that the blues will play nicely together.

So, there we have it. I'll keep you posted as the project progresses. Happy weekend everyone!

xo, Cameron
